SHILLONG, June 1: Expressing apprehensions about the state government’s purported intention to effect a change in the management of the Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MeECL), the Meghalaya Power Workers’ Union has petitioned Chief Minister Conrad Sangma seeking the retention of DP Wahlang as the Chairman-cum-Managing Director of MeECL.
The Union, in a letter to the CM, credited Wahlang with the initiatives to revamp the Corporation.
Reacting to a statement of Power Minister, Prestone Tynsong, in connection with the appointment of a full-time CMD, the union said the matter is very sensitive and crucial in nature and will have a major impact in the functioning of the MeECL.
“The Union would like to express its apprehension against the intention of the government in making such crucial changes in the management without any deliberation with the stakeholder who in turn would be affected with the decision,” the union said in the letter.
Elaborating on the contribution of DP Wahlang to the MeECL, the union claimed that that he has been able to address several issues relating to the corporation and its employees such as strengthening the administrative services in the holding company and its subsidiary company (MePDCL, MePGCL and MePTCL), making regular payments towards state and central gencos for power purchase dues so as to avoid regulation of power, timely disbursement of salaries and pensions, proper implementation of the ongoing scheme works and other schemes which are in the pipelines, release of payments to contractors and suppliers, etc.
