Mawpat residents get sensitised on safe banking
SHILLONG, June 7: Residents of Mawpat village in East Khasi Hills were on Tuesday sensitised on aspects and benefits of banking, financial literacy and inclusion and the ultimate objective of financial well-being of the people during the Field-Level Financial Literacy Event organised by Reserve Bank of India, Shillong, as part of the Iconic Week Celebration under Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav. Speaking to the gathering, General Manager and Officer-in-Charge, RBI, Shillong, P Gangte, informed them about the launch of JanSamarth portal – a one-step digital portal for credit-linked government schemes that directly connect beneficiaries to lenders. Around 80 participants comprising students, members of self-help groups, small entrepreneurs, etc., participated in the programme. A total of 27 sanction letters amounting to Rs 2.24 crore from the banks operating in the area were handed over to the beneficiaries. As part of the event, well-performing branch managers and business correspondents were felicitated as a gesture of reward and recognition of their good work towards financial inclusion and Priority Sector Lending. A Quiz session was also conducted and school bags with financial literacy messages printed on theme were thereon distributed among 33 school students for greater dissemination of the messages.

Outreach programmes today
SHILLONG, June 7: As part of Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav celebrations, all public sector banks will organise outreach programmes in all districts on Wednesday. The outreach programmes will be held in all the districts to facilitate information to the public on credit facility and enrolment in government schemes.

DGP warns against drugs use

TURA, June 7: Newly appointed Director General of Police (DGP) Dr Lajja Ram Bishnoi, while interacting with the students of Tura Don Bosco College recently, cautioned against drugs use and spoke about the roles educational institutes can play to address the issue. The DGP, who was on his maiden visit to Garo Hills, paid a visit to the college and held interactions with the students and faculty members on the menace of drugs. The DGP spoke on the type of drugs, its consequences and what the teachers can do to help drug users in schools and colleges. Cautioning that usage of drugs has destroyed families, he urged students to stay away from it. Following the interaction, the DGP signed the ‘Climate Champions’ campaign organised by the Environment Studies department of the college and plant saplings to the participants. Others who were part of the programme include West Garo Hills Superintendent of Police (SP) Vivekanand Rathore, Additional Superintendent of Police Vikash Kumar, among other police officials.

Vehicular regulation in WJH
JOWAI, June 7: Only light vehicles will now be allowed to ply on the bridge (Bridge No.17/1) over Mynrud river on Ummulong-Tyrshang-Bamkamar road in West Jaintia Hills, informed Executive Engineer, PWD (Roads), Jowai Central Division, in a press release issued here. It was informed that the bridge has become weak and is unable to support heavy vehicles.
