SHILLONG, June 10: In what can be termed as a potential game-changer, Director General of Police (DGP) Lajja Ram Bishnoi has proposed the idea of making local dogs part of state police force.
The DGP, who was speaking to the reporters on the sidelines of the passing-out parade of 12 trainee police dogs and their handlers at Meghalaya Police Training School near Golf Links, also said that he will confer about the proposal with officials of CID and K-9 unit.
“Sometimes the local dogs and their skills, observations and work ethics are different. So as per requirements if the K-9 units feel that local dogs can be utilised for crime detection, we will definitely love to include those local dogs. I will discuss with CID officials as well as the K-9 unit officials,” he said.
It may be mentioned that the 12 trainee police dogs, following the passing-out parade, have been inducted in the K-9 Squad of the Meghalaya Police.
During the nine-month training, the dogs were trained to handle explosives as well as deal with narcotics cases.
