SHILLONG, June 11: Airing concern over sporadic cases of electrical accidents, the KSU has exhorted Power Minister Prestone Tynsong to get all transformers in Meghalaya fenced and provide compensation to a three-year-old girl from Mawkohphet village in South West Khasi Hills who recently lost her hands in an electrical accident.
Informing that unfenced transformers have become a menace for the residents of rural Meghalaya, the KSU said that the three-year-old, who was injured while playing near an unfenced transformer, continues to undergo treatment at NEIGRIHMS.
Stating that the nature of her injuries are grave and the she will have to face a lot of challenges hereon, the KSU said the state government, through the Meghalaya Power Distribution Corporation Ltd (MePDCL), should not only provide life-time compensation to the three-year-old but also take care of the expenses for her ongoing treatment.
Pointing out that electrical accidents are regular in rural parts of Meghalaya, the KSU informed that it had, following recent inspections in South West Khasi Hills and Mawsynram area, found that many of the transformers continue to remain unfenced, thereby posing danger to the general public.
The KSU has also demanded of the Power minister to conduct a thorough survey of all the transformers in the state and fence the same.
