SHILLONG, June 11: The North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU) will collaborate with the Indira Gandhi Cultural Centre for Arts (IGCCA), New Delhi, to showcase the rich cultural heritage of Meghalaya to the world.
As part of it, the IGCCA invited Prof Prabha Shankar Shukla, Vice-Chancellor of NEHU, to New Delhi for a discussion recently.
Prof Shukla held a meeting with Dr Sachchidanand Joshi, who is the Member Secretary of the IGCCA, on Friday. During the discussion, Dr Joshi said the cultural aspects and the rich heritage of the Northeast have not been tapped to a level that could popularise the region.
He said the researchers worked and studied the customs, cultures, folklores and arts of the Northeast but much more can be done to popularise them. He viewed his meeting with Prof Shukla as a stepping stone to future collaborations towards this end.
Through such collaborations, the people of Meghalaya will get an opportunity to showcase their talents in New Delhi, resulting in the popularisation of their arts and culture globally.
Prof Shukla brought to Dr Joshi’s knowledge that the Department of Culture and Creative Studies, with its rich resources of faculty and scholars, has done extensive work in studying and popularising the state’s culture and arts.
He said Meghalaya is rich culturally and the same needs promotion for the state’s cultural and economic growth. A lot of work is being done at the level of the NEHU to preserve and promote the state’s arts and culture, he said.
On the collaborations, he said, “It will not just benefit the university fraternity but also the civil society at large.”
Stating that NEHU is interested in working with the civil society, Prof Shukla said the collaboration would bring about opportunities to the university fraternity to be directly involved with the people for the progress of the society.
He was presented with a coffee table book titled Jewels of North-East India that Dr Joshi authored.
Prof Shukla also met the Secretary, Skill Development for skill-oriented courses and infrastructure at NEHU. The meeting, also attended by the VC of Bilaspur Central University, was held to discuss the possibilities of starting skill development courses at the varsity.
Prof Shukla said such courses would directly benefit the locals to be skillfully employed.
