SHILLONG, June 17: The High Court of Meghalaya on Friday asked the Meghalaya government to take a more proactive role to resolve the perceived political interference and find a long-term solution to the problem of garbage in Jowai town.
The Division Bench of court said that though it appears that things have improved, there does not appear to be any long-term solution in sight.
“There is a perception of the Court that political considerations may be standing in the way of any long-term solution being found. It is hoped that better sense would prevail on persons trying to put an impediment to a long-term solution or the identification of the appropriate site,” the court said.
On the ground, however, the petitioner admitted that things have improved and the Jowai Municipal Board submitted that there is now regular removal of garbage and a temporary site has been identified and the same is being used.
The state should take a more proactive role, at least to resolve the perceived political interference. Let the matter appear three weeks hence,” the bench said.
