Baghmara, June 21: After visiting other affected areas in the Khasi – Jaintia Hills region, Chief Minister, Conrad Sangma today began his visit to the recent rain-affected areas in West and South Garo Hills.

The CM, who began his tour with a visit to Dalu this afternoon will stay overnight in Baghmara before venturing further into places in the district that have been worst affected in the recent deluge.

The CM was accompanied by other MLAs of the MDA government as well as officials of the district administration and PWD officials. He met villagers affected by the washing away of a bridge in Dalu which has led to connectivity issues between villages. The CM has promised to facilitate work on a war footing to restore connections that have been lost due to the flash floods.

Meanwhile, leader of the Opposition (LO), AITC leader, Mukul Sangma, after paying a visit to the Nongalbibra area yesterday once again reached Baghmara this afternoon to get first-hand information on the damage caused and also speak to victims of the flash flood.

Essential commodities were air-dropped by the Indian Air Force today in many inaccessible villages in SGH district. These places have lost all forms of road connectivity in the downpour on June 17 last.

Meanwhile, the worst affected areas of South Garo Hills district including Siju, Rongara, Maheshkola, Khalu along with its adjoining areas, remained cut off from the rest of the state. The bridge in Karukol on NH 62 that would have connected Siju has been washed away while the same road towards Nongalbibra has suffered extensive damage. The main bridge connecting Rongara too has been washed away while the roads connecting Khalu and Maheskola are completely out of function.
