International Day of Yoga observed in GH

Tura, June 21: The 8th International Day of Yoga was on Tuesday observed in different parts of Garo Hills by both the government departments and private institutions in separate functions held at different venues to mark the occasion.

In Tura, the occasion under the theme ‘Yoga for Humanity’ was observed at the District Indoor Stadium where West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner, Swapnil Tembe was the Chief Guest. The programme was organised by the District Medical and Health Office (DM&HO), West Garo Hills Tura.

Speaking on the occasion, Tembe informed about various health benefits and fitness associated with the regular practise of yoga in our daily life. He also said that it was a matter of great pride for India since yoga has become global and people across the world are taking part together for better health and wellness. Stating that Yoga is not only about exercise, he added it has deep meaning with holistic approach to health, wellness and balancing the mind, body and soul.

In his keynote address, Dr. Sambu Aryal, Medical Officer, Yoga and Naturopathy said that Yoga is an Art and Science for Healthy living based on an extremely subtle science which focuses on bringing harmony between body and mind. He also informed that the word Yoga is derived from the Sanskrit root “Yuj” meaning “to join” symbolising the union of persons body and consciousness and added that the aim of yoga is to overcome all kinds of suffering with holistic health, happiness and harmony and thus known for disease prevention, health promotion and management of many lifestyle related disorders.

During the function, different Yoga Aasnas was also demonstrated by Dr. Sambu Aryal where Deputy Commissioner, District and Session Judge, Chief Judicial Magistrate, Medical officers, nursing students and others join in to celebrate the International Day of Yoga.

The occasion was also observed at the College of Community Science, Central Agriculture University in Tura and the Central Agriculture University, Krishi Vighyan Kendra in Willaimnagar, East Garo Hills.

The Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan (NYKS) in collaboration with the Sadananda Yoga and Culture Centre and the Tura Natya Samity also observed the occasion. Similarly, the occasion was observed by the Nehru Yuva Kendra from East Garo Hills district at the DRDA ground one.
