SHILLONG, June 24: A five-member team of the Indian Institute of Technology-Guwahati (IIT-G) on Friday began probing the collapse of the dome of the under-construction Assembly building at the New Shillong Township.
A senior official of the PWD (Buildings) said the IIT-G team started the safety audit with the left wing of the Assembly building. After the right wing is covered, the dome portion will be audited in the final stage.
He said no one would be allowed into the premises of the Assembly building, including the PWD (Buildings) officials, while the probe is on.
The PWD had signed the probe agreement with the IIT-G, which will conduct a “non-destructive” test on the safety and stability of the entire building except the dome portion.
“The report on the building will be submitted within 15 days, after which the work can resume,” the official said, adding that the report on the dome will be submitted within two months after a thorough analysis.
The collapse of the dome had left the state government embarrassed. Political parties, pressure groups, civil society organisations and citizens slammed the government for alleged shoddy construction. They are still demanding a CBI probe into the incident.
