SHILLONG, June 28: Assembly Speaker Metbah Lyngdoh on Tuesday said the audit team from the Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati (ITG) would be able to confirm the strength of the left and right wings of the assembly building project and file a report within a week or ten days.
“As informed by the office of the Chief Engineer of PWD (Buildings), they started the audit last week and they would be able to tell us about the strength of the left and right wings and maybe those parts of the central hall which have not been damaged,” Lyngdoh said, adding, “We will study the report and decide our next step.”
The IITG team has sought two months’ time to complete its audit. It will find out the reason(s) behind the collapse of the central dome on May 22.
Facing severe backlash over the massive embarrassment, the state government had written to four IITs requesting them to dispatch a team to inquire into the reasons behind the fiasco. It was only IITG which responded to the government’s SOS and agreed to probe the collapse of the central dome that was touted as a highlight of what was to be an iconic structure of Shillong and the state.
