SHILLONG, July 3: Rallying solidly behind All India Trinamool Congress national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee, the Meghalaya Pradesh Trinamool Congress on Sunday said Banerjee’s remarks against Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma and the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance government was an echo of the voice of the people and if anyone has to apologise it must be the ruling dispensation for indulging in rampant corruption and duping the people.
“Whenever a truth is spoken, people who cannot bear the truth feel hurt. The reality that lies beyond the boundaries of the Meghalaya Secretariat should be realized by the government as we are simply echoing the voice of majority of the people in the state,” AITC Meghalaya leader George B Lyngdoh said.
He made it clear that the NPP does not represent the entire state since it is only a political party that represents only a section of the society which believes in their ideology.
“Whatever has been spoken by the AITC national general secretary is an echo of whatever is in already public circulation and the sentiments of the people and words coined by the people in the public domain,” Lyngdoh said.
Dismissing the NPP’s demand for an apology from the AITC’s second-in-command, he said, “I think an apology should come from those corrupt people who have hurt the citizens most.”
“If the government feels that we should apologise for voicing the concerns of the people then they should go to the people and let them decide whether we should apologise to the government or not,” the AITC leader said.
Referring to the indefinite protests by the ad hoc teachers, Lyngdoh said, “Look at the teachers who have been sitting on the road for so many days but not even one minister had the courtesy to visit them. So, shouldn’t there be an apology.”
He asked the government to apologise for the wastage of Rs 170-plus crore for the Assembly project, and all other scams including the rice scam and Saubhagya scam.
He also wanted to know if the state government was trying to shut the mouth of the opposition for voicing the concerns of the people. “Even the messengers are being accused by the government,” he added.
