NONGPOH, July 4: Left unattended for years, the Dorbar Shnong of Nongkhrah has expressed apprehension that the unfinished construction of the Polytechnic project in Nongkhrah village in Ri-Bhoi district has rendered the site a safe haven for anti-social activities.
The project in question was started in 2018 but due to reasons best known to the contractor and the government, it has been left unattended with minimal construction work being completed.
The project was initially sanctioned at an amount of Rs 8.38 crore, which was subsequently revised to Rs 7.05 crore.
The village leaders of Nongkhrah, led by its headman Celestine Syngkli and Min Makri, a prominent leader who has been instrumental in introducing the project, visited the construction site on Monday.
After examining the site, they said the project has been lying unattended for five years now, while urging the concerned contractor and the government to expedite the project work for the benefit of the students of the district.
Stating that the land was donated by the Raid Nongkhrah and Raid Nonglyngdoh for the betterment of the student community, the inspecting party said that the delay in completion of this project has made the donors feel deceived to the point that they have asked the Education department to cancel the work order allotted to the present contractor and find a competent one who can complete the project within a stipulated time.
