SHILLONG, July 9: More than 87,000 passengers have travelled from Shillong airport in the last year, indicating that the airport has the potential for more flights.
Statistics revealed that from July 2021 till June this year, 87,273 passenger movements took place in the airport. The highest movement took place in December 2021 with 10,777 passengers.
The past 12 months saw 2,436 flights from Shillong airport with December last year and March this year recording the highest of 254 flights. In a tweet, the airport authorities said the Umroi facility does not have a courier service despite the increase in passenger movement and the Airports Authority of India, the Central Industrial Security Force, the airlines and other agencies operating from there.
However, the delivery of newspapers started recently at the airport.
The state government had a few days ago floated an expression of interest for a proposed greenfield airport in Ri-Bhoi or East Khasi Hills district as the airport at Umroi is not feasible for the operation of bigger flights due to geographical challenges. Only ATRs are operating from the airport.
