Govt warns action against illegal motorcycle taxi operators

SHILLONG, July 14: The Transport department has provided an opportunity to the motorcycle taxi operators, who are allegedly providing services without a licence, to apply for the same with the District Transport Office, Shillong, at the earliest, failing which notices will be issued to them.
“Notice will be issued to all existing operators who are yet to obtain their license with a fixed time given for compliance,” the Regional Transport Authority Board, East Khasi Hills, said.
Stating that the Transport department had in February 2020 notified the Meghalaya Taxi Aggregator Operational Rules 2020 allowing local entrepreneurs and agencies to come forward and apply for the operator’s licence to run motorcycle taxi service as per rules with the Board.
According to the member secretary of the Board, applications have been received from local entrepreneurs and agencies for he said licence, which are being processed.
However, it flagged the issue of several motorcycle taxis running the transport service allegedly without any appropriate permit and in contravention of the Motor Vehicles Act and Meghalaya Taxi Aggregator Operational Rules.
The board has directed aggregators to comply with the rules and apply for requisite licences.
