Speaker for judicious use of electricity

SHILLONG/NONGSTOIN/TURA, July 26: Days after Meghalaya bore the brunt of frequent load-shedding due to power crisis, Assembly Speaker Metbah Lyngdoh has made a clarion call for judicious use of power in the state.
Lyngdoh was speaking at a programme to celebrate ‘Bijli Mahotsav’ in Eastern West Khasi Hills organised by the district administration in collaboration with North Eastern Eletric Power Corporation Limited (NEEPCO), Shillong, and Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MeECL) at Tirot Sing Memorial Hall, Pyndengumiong, Mairang, on Tuesday.
Bijli Mahotsav celebratory programmes are being held all over the country under the umbrella of Ujjwal Bharat Ujjwal Bhavishya – Power @2047 for more public participation and getting across the developments in the power sector to the citizens at large.
In order to engage with the visitors and guests, various cultural programmes, skits and screening of short films on the power sector are being organised as part of the celebrations.
Speaking as chief guest of the programme, Lyngdoh highlighted the different interventions in the power sector initiated by the central government in collaboration with states and union territories, while also stating that the schemes and programmes have benefitted the citizens.
The Speaker also congratulated the district administration of Eastern West Khasi Hills, NEEPCO and MeECL for organising the programme which provided the right platform for highlighting the importance of power in day-to-day life and to create awareness on various schemes and programmes of the Power department.
Meanwhile, Deputy Commissioner of Eastern West Khasi Hills W Nongsiej, in his address, spoke on Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav and reminisced on the history and legacy of Khasi freedom fighter Ka Phan Nonglait, whose valour and bravery in the freedom struggle against British occupation is remembered to this day.
Other highlights of the celebration include testimonials from beneficiaries of schemes from the Power department, screening of short films depicting achievements in the power sector.
A skit was performed by students of Mairang Presbyterian Higher Secondary School, Mairang, and a song by students of St. Xavier Secondary School, Nongkhlaw.
Similar programme was held in West Khasi Hills organised by the district administration in association with the Power department at Dorbar Hall, Mawkhlam-Nongpyndeng.
The other highlights of the promgamme included cultural performances and screening of films.
‘Bijli Mahotsav’ celebrations were also held in Pynursla, East Khasi Hills, South Garo Hills and South West Garo Hills districts.
