SHILLONG, July 26: NPP national president and Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Tuesday exuded confidence that the writing on the wall was clear that his party will singlehandedly return to power after the 2023 Assembly polls.
Addressing a gathering to formally welcome former Congress MLA from Mawphlang Kennedy C Khyriem into the NPP, Sangma went a step further and claimed that NPP will form a single-party government next year.
“I am confident we will be able to do it through the efforts of each and every party leader and worker. But we cannot be complacent since we need to work hard to turn this into a reality,” Sangma said.
Asserting that he would not like to speak about his political rivals, Sangma declined to pinpoint the biggest rival of the NPP ahead of the 2023 electoral battle.
Sangma’s confidence is likely to rattle coalition partners of the MDA like the UDP, the PDF, the BJP and the HSPDP, who have extended their unflinching support to the NPP-led government despite an abundance of allegations of corruption and misgovernance against the ruling dispensation.
It remains to be seen how the allies react to the CM’s remark.
