NEW DELHI, July 28: Opposition leader Mukul Sangma on Thursday clarified that dozens of militant outfits were operating in the state during the regime of the previous government.
“The state was confronted by real challenges of dealing with militancy and internal security matters due to number of militants and proscribed terrorist organisations operating then. Despite that, the previous state government, with its multipronged and comprehensive measures, dealt with such problems effectively and restored complete peace by 2018,” Sangma told The Shillong Times.
When the new government took charge peace has been already restored and, particularly, in the western region of the state, no militant or proscribed terrorist organisations were operating.
“We handed over a peaceful and progressive state to the new government to carry the state towards progress and prosperity,” he said.
But due to the inept and anti-people government, there is now palpable lawlessness and emergence of new militant outfits, the TMC leader said. “These are matters of serious public concern,” he added.
Sangma also said that the MDA government and Chief Minister Conrad Sangma were always in denial mode whenever the government is asked to take cognisance of alleged irregularities and corruption. The government has failed to take action as per law, thereby failing to protect the interests of the people and the state as a whole, he said.
“I didn’t allege that the chief minister is indulging in huge corruption as reported,” the TMC leader further clarified.
