Two cops suspended over drug possession

SHILLONG, Aug 1: Constable Ajay Chettri of Meghalaya Police was on Monday placed under suspension and arrested following the recovery of more than 10 gram of heroin from his possession.
West Garo Hills SP Vivekanand Singh said that the Anti-Narcotic Task Force (ANTF) conducted an early morning operation and recovered approximately 10.53 gm of heroin from the possession of Chettri.
The contraband was dispatched through a night bus by Khawbok Diengdoh (29), a drug peddler and resident of Dongkamon Nongmensong, who has also been taken into custody.
The driver, handyman and owner of a night bus, Arup Nag (57), Suresh Burman (59) and Shankar Dalu (33), respectively, have also been detained for interrogation.
A mobile phone with SIM card, the night bus (ML08 E 6111) and a car (AS01 AB 6116) have also been seized.
Diengdoh was arrested in Shillong on the basis of information provided by West Garo Hills Police and a small quantity of heroin was recovered from his possession.
In another case, the ANTF conducted an operation at Praharinagar on Sunday night and recovered 48 SP capsules. The force also arrested Sumon Majumdar, Gudhu Modak and Constable Sheemanto Hajong in connection with the case.
One auto-rickshaw (ML08 H 2128) and six mobile phones were seized.
In the third case, police arrested five people including two teenagers and a woman from Jingkieng-Demthring area in Shillong on Sunday after heroin worth over Rs 3 crore and Rs 4.5 lakh in cash were seized from their possession.
Police recovered 40 soap cases containing heroin weighing 559 gm and arrested Shaniah Kharmawphlang (19).
Based on leads provided by the arrested person, police arrested Daniel Nongrum (20) of Nongrah Nongpdeng in Shillong.
The drug supplier Esther Ramhmangaih (37) of Manipur’s Churachandpur district was arrested from her rented house at Thembasuk Block F of Madanrting from where police seized Rs 4.42 lakh in cash.
Police also arrested two couriers – Robinson Hmar (19) of Aizawl and Letminlen Doungel (30) of Churachandpur — from the house. A car, Rs 2.19 lakh in cash and a scooty were also seized, the police said. (With PTI inputs)
