SHILLONG, Aug 7: BJP national executive member and Pynthorumkhrah MLA AL Hek is confident that the saffron party will better its position in the 2023 Assembly elections since people of the state are looking at the party as an alternative due to the pro-people policies of the BJP-led government at the Centre under the dynamic leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
“The party leadership in the state only needs to plan and strategise to take advantage of this positive vibe about the party among the people of the state in the upcoming 2023 Assembly elections,” Hek said.
Reminded that there a huge hullabaloo about the BJP in 2018 with many sitting MLAs joining the party, Hek replied that in 2023 it is going to be bigger and better.
“We need to understand that timing is very crucial in politics. Many are eager to join the party. Sitting MLAs from other parties cannot join the BJP now due to the anti-defection law. Most of them will join us just ahead of the elections,” the BJP leader said.  He asserted that the BJP will contest in not less than 40 seats and they have a great chance to win at least 10 to 15 seats.
Reminded that the BJP had won only two seats in 2018, he said the party is better organised this time as compared to 2018.
The BJP MLA admitted that the people in the state have been voting by looking at the candidate and not the party. According to him, party-based politics has not been able to get a firm footing in the state.
“This phenomenon applies to all political parties and it not restricted only to the BJP. We are going to do well since we are getting good candidates,” Hek said.
He further claimed that the BJP has a great a future and the result of the 2023 Assembly polls will be the beginning of a new era for the saffron party in Meghalaya.
