SHILLONG, Aug 7: The Meghalaya Assembly Committee on Empowerment of Women will take up the case of the five minors recently rescued from the ‘brothel’ allegedly run by BJP state vice president Bernard Marak in his farmhouse located on the outskirts of Tura.
The Assembly committee has summoned officials of the Social Welfare department to provide details of the five minors during the meeting of the committee at 11 am on Monday.
The committee had earlier asked officials of the department to submit details on the status of these minors.
Chairperson of the committee Ampareen Lyngdoh on Sunday said they will review the progress of the police investigation into the alleged murder of two minors by their father Joefreeson Jana at Wahktieh, Nongrah Nonglum on May 30.
Earlier, Lyngdoh had informed that the Social Welfare department will release ex-gratia payment of Rs 5 lakh to the family of the two minors.
Lyngdoh further said that the East Jaintia Hills Superintendent of Police had briefed the committee on crimes committed against women and children in the district.
According to her, the SP had informed the committee that since January 2022, police have registered around 26 cases of crime against children including some involving sections of the POCSO Act.
Lyngdoh said the House panel has asked the SP to get back to the committee with all details pertaining to the 26 cases.
