NONGSTOIN, Aug 7: A total of seven beneficiaries of the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) along with the residents of Mawkhumkha under Mawshynrut Civil Sub-Division in West Khasi Hills have raised complaints against the contractor who has not completed work on their house as per the agreement.
Bonyphas Sangriang, one of the beneficiaries, said that the group of seven beneficiaries from Mawkhumkha village received the PMAY scheme for the year 2019-2020, and all of them agreed to hand over the construction to one Gerald Tynhiang, the contractor in question, to build houses.
However, the work has been delayed by three years while both the first and second installments have been withdrawn from the bank, the aggrieved beneficiaries complain.
When requested to complete the work, the contractor has allegedly even threatened them with dire consequences.
This left them with no other option but to complain to the Block Development Officer of Mawshynrut, they said.
Interestingly, the BDO has given an ultimatum to the contractor to resume the work within 15 days but he has not responded.
Headman of Mawkhumkha village has also backed their claims and has affirmed that the contractor has failed to complete the work as per the agreement made between him and the beneficiaries.
According to the headman, the said beneficiaries are not in a financial position to complete the houses with their resources.
He also said that due to the incomplete work, sanction has been blocked for other beneficiaries of the scheme in the village.
After hearing the complaints, the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) Mawshynrut Circle carried out an inspection of the houses.
President of the union Armstrong Sohshang has urged the BDO to take stock of the situation, while adding that the contractor has to respect the agreement.
