MAWKYRWAT, Aug 7: As political fronts begin to up their game in the run-up to the next year’s assembly polls, United Democratic Party (UDP) MLA from Ranikor Pius Marwein has urged the voters to give the party a chance to lead the government for five years on no promises but has left them to judge for themselves as to how things take a turn — for the good is what Marwein seemed confident about.
He was speaking at a meeting in Rangthong village, South West Khasi Hills, on Saturday to elect the office-bearers of the UDP Women’s Wing Ranikor Circle.
In his address, he said, “Whenever there is any problem in the state, some opportunists question what was the UDP doing? But they forget that the electorates elected only six MLAs from the UDP. Luckily, through the bye-election in Ranikor and Mawphlang constituencies, now we have eight MLAs in the House of 60. Therefore, it is not easy for eight MLAs to bring changes since we are not the one that lead the government”.
Telling the public to avoid being misled by allegations against the UDP, Marwein said it is time for them to reject the national parties which have ruled the state for almost t40 years.
“…vote for the UDP being the largest regional party in the state in the 2023 general elections because we have many leaders who can lead the state to the better future. Give UDP five years and then judge the performance,” the Ranikor MLA said, adding that it is unfair to criticize the party without giving it a chance.
Speaking about the Ranikor Constituency, the local MLA said that the UDP through its different units has prepared well for the upcoming elections.
Stating that the party is ready, he said, “Through the formation of the Youth Wing and Women’s Wing Ranikor Circle, along with the zonal units and primary units in every village, I have no doubt that we will win the election,” Marwein said.
He reiterated that the party carries big hopes of leading the government in the state in 2023.
Besides, the Khasi-Jaintia Hills, the UDP is also optimistic about winning seats in the Garo Hills region as well.
The UDP Women’s Wing Ranikor Circle will be led by Larimon Kharlartang as the president and Nirmaya Hajor as the secretary along with six vice presidents, six joint secretaries among other office-bearers.
