SHILLONG, Aug 8: Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma has suggested the introduction of foreign languages in the curriculum, while contending that the same will not only raise the standard of education in Meghalaya but also further employability skills of the state youths.
Addressing a gathering during the inauguration of the College of Nursing at Dr H Gordon Roberts Hospital, Shillong, the chief minister said the hospital has, over the years, overcome the challenges with an objective to serve mankind with dedication.
“From a humble beginning of School of Nursing with just two students to the College of Nursing as it stands today, the hospital, its staff and faculty have overcome the challenges and it is heartening to note that the College of Nursing is being inaugurated in the 50th year of statehood,” the chief minister said.
Stressing that it is imperative for the hospital and the College of Nursing to envision production of empathetic, dedicated and faithful nurses, the chief minister said, “With the backing, guidance and support of the Presbyterian church, this college will produce nurses who will not only save lives but also make a difference in people’s lives.”
He said more institutes like this should come up in Meghalaya and channel the potential of the youths in the right direction.
Suggesting the introduction of foreign languages in the curriculum, the chief minister said, “We have a huge youth population and there is a huge opportunity for our youths in the next few years to be employed in various sectors in countries like Japan and Thailand where the population is aging.”
Exhorting the college and hospital to ensure that the standards of professional are at the international level, the chief minister also assured governmental support to the institution.
