SHILLONG, Aug 14: The proscribed Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) on Sunday said it celebrated its 35th raising day by hoisting its flag at the bridge near Jingthang Briew, Jaiaw.
On his Facebook page, HNLC publicity secretary Sainkupar Nongtraw said the flag was hoisted by a member of the rebel group in the morning. The outfit was formed on August 14, 1987.
A senior police official said they received information about the hoisting of the flag in the afternoon and it was immediately removed. He also said the police are probing the incident.
Earlier, the HNLC had said its ongoing peace process would bring about political changes and benefits to empower the indigenous population.
“Our struggle is a political one. We need to bring about a political solution in order to ease away the difficulties faced by our people from time to time,” Nongtraw had stated in a statement.
He thanked each member of the outfit, cadres, including its military and political wing, and the leaders who have been assigned to pursue the peace talks.
