Guwahati, Aug 16:  Students from the University of Science and Technology Meghalaya (USTM) will soon be invited to represent the Northeast in a world cultural festival.

This was announced by chairman of the Sharjah Institute for Heritage, UAE, Abdulaziz Al Musallam while gracing the 76th Independence Day programme at USTM on Monday.

Addressing a huge gathering as chief guest of the function, Musallam thanked the founder chancellor of USTM for the hospitality and achievements of the university.

“It’s my great happiness to be here on this very special day. Whenever we talk of cultural heritage, we always mention India. Indians always keep their identity and at the same time rise in the path of education and progress,” he said.

The programme on Monday marked the eventful week-long celebration of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav in the university.

Musallam was impressed by the presentation of the rich cultural heritage of the eight Northeast states by USTM students.

“Students of USTM will be invited to represent North East India in a world cultural festival,” he said.

The Sharjah Institute for Heritage has been working with UNESCO in a global platform for cultural integration connecting people for peace and harmony.

A cultural procession and cultural showcase of all the north-eastern states of India was witnessed by many, which culminated at the central auditorium of the university.

The week-long programme began at USTM on August 9 to mark the celebration of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav. More than 2000 residential students of USTM took part in the “Azadi March” organised on the occasion at the university campus.

On August 12, a large group of students, including seven units of the NSS Cell, took out a bike rally for distribution of the Tricolour amidst villagers within five km radius of the university to materialise the dream of “Har Ghar Tiranga, Har Ghar Shiksha”.

Moreover, different departments of the USTM also observed the week-long celebration under their departmental initiatives raising the spirit of patriotism.
