SHILLONG, Aug 21: Amid murmurs about several leaders jumping ship ahead of the crucial assembly elections next year growing louder, one of the suspended Congress leaders, West Shillong MLA Mohendro Rapsang has expressed his inclination towards the ruling National People’s Party (NPP).
Rapsang made this statement on Sunday while reacting to recent claims made by BJP leader AL Hek who sad that discussions were held with regard to the former joining the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
The West Shillong MLA said that a lot of political parties have approached him to with the offer of joining them which includes the BJP and the United Democratic Party (UDP).
“I am not joining any party now. I am still a Congressman but my inclination is to contest elections from NPP. I make that clear,” Rapsang said.
When asked about the high anti-incumbency factor against the NPP, he said that the incumbent government comprises all political parties, adding that anti-incumbency will be a concern for the UDP and BJP as well.
Asked to comment about the allegations of lack of development in his constituency, Rapsang said he has tried his best and is satisfied with the developmental work initiated under West Shillong. He pointed out that West Shillong is the only constituency where streetlights have been upgraded to LED lights.
“See the road condition in my constituency. It is one of the best in the whole of Shillong town, we don’t have water problem. Whoever comes, I always try to help them with schools, health anything,” Rapsang said.
It may be mentioned that the sitting MLA is set to face dual challenge this time as apart from nemesis Paul Lyngdoh, BJP president Ernest Mawrie has also made up his mind to enter the fray and is also frequently seen campaigning in the constituency.
