SHILLONG, Sep 2: Deputy Chief Minister in-charge of PWD (Roads) Prestone Tynsong on Friday said a work order has been issued in three packages to repair and improve the existing road from Umshyrpi to Dawki.
“The National Highways Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) has called for three packages — Umshyrpi to Upper Shillong, Mylliem to Pynursla and Pynursla to Dawki. For the Umshyrpi-Upper Shillong stretch the work order has been issued and weather permitting the repair work will start soon,” Tynsong said.
Parts of the Shillong-Umiam stretch of National Highway 6 and the Shillong-Mylliem Road have developed potholes and large cracks.
The situation is worsening by the day.
Tynsong had earlier said he has asked the NHIDCL to invite tender for redoing the Shillong-Umiam stretch of NH-6.
In addition, the state government has floated tender for construction of smart roads (Phase II) of 10 km length and beautification of 12 junctions in the city. The estimated cost for all these projects is Rs 134.50 crore and the period of completion is two years.
The deadline for receiving bids is October 7 and the technical bids would be opened on the same day.
With regards to repair of other roads in and around the city, the PWD would take up work only after the monsoon season is over.
A PWD official said the Mawlai road will also be repaired but since realignment of water pipes is in progress, they cannot start the work immediately.
Repair of roads in other localities like Lachumiere will be taken up under the Shillong Smart City Project, the official said.
