SHILLONG, Sep 17: The state BJP on Saturday joined the nationwide celebrations of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s 72nd birthday by organising a slew of welfare activities.
It is pertinent to note that a 15-day seva diwas was launched by the BJP across the country on Saturday with its national president JP Nadda asserting that serving people to mark the birthday of the party’s foremost leader is in keeping with his vision.
In Meghalaya, state BJP chief Ernest Mawrie inaugurated an exhibition on the premier’s life at State Central Library.
A mobile van exhibiting Modi’s life then later traversed Shillong.
Later, Mawrie and party MLA AL Hek, along with the state BJP team and Mahila Morcha, also attended a cake-cutting ceremony at state party office here.
The occasion was also marked by blood donation campaigns across the state.
“The Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM), North Shillong unit, organised blood donation at Robert Hospital during which 35 youths donated blood,” the statement said, adding that the BJYM also organised similar camps in other districts.
“The state Mahila Morcha also adopted five anganwadi centres for next six months,” the statement said.
A tree plantation drive was also organised at Jhalupara as part of the celebrations, and was attended by Mawrie and BJP MLA Sanbor Shullai.
“The Mahila Morcha team also visited the Anganwadis and celebrated the prime minister’s birthday with children,” the statement said, adding “Modi’s birthday was celebrated in all BJP mandals across the state.”
Modi, India’s 15th prime minister, was born on September 17, 1950, in Gujarat’s Vadnagar.
An RSS pracharak from a young age, Modi was drafted into the BJP’s organisation in the latter half of the 80s and rose to become the chief minister of Gujarat in 2001.
He also led the BJP to win in three consecutive Gujarat Assembly polls in 2002, 2007 and 2012, and the Lok Sabha polls in 2014 and 2019.
Since 2014, the party has used the occasion of the PM’s birthday to launch ‘seva’ and development initiatives.
From a 15-day blood donation drive in the country to cleanliness and tree plantation campaigns and health camps, scores of welfare activities were undertaken by the ruling BJP and others in various parts of the country to mark the prime minister’s birthday.
