TURA, Sep 18: The ‘continued neglect’ of NEHU Tura Campus by its authorities in Shillong has drew flak from the Garo Students’ Union (GSU) CEC led by Zikku Balgra N Marak, which has warned that the situation could lead to protests in the coming days.
“The Tura Campus of NEHU, one of the prestigious institutes of higher learning, was established in February 1996 after a lot of struggle by local stakeholders. Since its inception the HQ has never bothered to create even a single post of ministerial staff. This campus was managed by the repatriated staff of erstwhile Nagaland campus of NEHU. The neglect has come to such a pass that there are only few regular staff in the campus which is fully dependent on outsourced staff numbering about 250,” the union said.
The union added that successive administrative regime miserably failed in visualising the need of a growing campus. According to the union, the university was headed by a Pro Vice Chancellor from 1996 till 2021 after which no new appointment has been made to outgoing PVC despite repeated assurance being made by the Vice Chancellor.
“This kind of lackadaisical attitude by the headquarters shows that the administration is hell bent on downgrading the status of Tura Campus. The attitude of the NEHU authorities is creating a lot of anger and dissatisfaction in the stakeholders which will certainly manifest itself in coming days in the form of strong protest from various corners,” it warned.
