SHILLONG, Sep 27: The North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU), through its Department of Tourism and Hotel Management, organised a programme to celebrate World Tourism Day 2022 on the theme ‘Rethinking Tourism’ at multi-convention hall, NEHU Shillong.
Speaking on the occasion, chief guest Prof Badaplin War highlighted the importance of preserving and promoting cultural tourism.
Another highlight of the programme was the panel discussion between eminent personalities, including Editor of The Shillong Times Patricia Mukhim, CCF-cum-Project Director, Khasi Hills Community REDD+ Tambor Lyngdoh, president of Federation of Shillong Hotels Parambir Singh Sehdave, Center Coordinator, Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Centre for Policy Research and Analysis, IIM Shillong Dr Sanjeev Nigombam, and Secretary, Kongthong Indigenous Agro Tourism Cooperative Society Rothell Khongsit.
The panel discussion laid emphasis on the issues pertaining to carrying capacity, women empowerment, lack of common portal for accommodations and related infrastructure, policy implementation and the need to focus on niche tourism like cuisines and wellness with a consistent focus sustainable tourism development.
The event also included a Quiz competition, which was participated by students of IHM, MLCU and JMC, NEHU Shillong. A cultural show was also displayed by the students of NEHU as part of the programme.
