MAWKYRWAT, Sep 27: The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) from South West Khasi Hills has called for the provision of scholarships for the sportspersons from the district.
After calling on South West Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner Caramai Kharkongor over the matter, KSU district president Forwardman Nongrem said that albeit the district-based sportspersons have been bringing laurels to the district, they also continue to reel under problems aplenty.
“The Union was very concerned to see that the talented youths did not get the help that they deserve from the government when they participate in the national as well as international level competitions. It is also true that the absence of such help from the government has discouraged the youths to work hard and sharpen their skills as majority of them came from poor families,” Nongrem said, while speaking to media persons here.
Informing that there have been many instances when the sportspersons call on the KSU for help ahead of their competitions outside Meghalaya, Nongrem said, “That is why the Union requested the DC to find solutions to the problems faced by the talented sportspersons of the district by providing sports scholarship to them.”
