SHILLONG, Oct 3: Arunachal Pradesh Governor Brig. BD Mishra (retired) would be sworn in as Governor of Meghalaya on Monday after his predecessor Satya Pal Malik retired on Monday, a Raj Bhavan official said.
Chief Justice of Meghalaya High Court Sanjib Banerjee will administer the oath of office to the Governor at Raj Bhavan at 10 am, the official said.
In an order issued on Saturday, President Droupadi Murmu asked Brig. Mishra to take additional charge of Meghalaya until regular arrangements are made.
76-year-old Malik had served as the Governor of Bihar on September 30, 2017. He was then sent to Jammu and Kashmir in August 2018 and Goa in October 2019 before being transferred to Meghalaya in August 2020.
He was the Governor of Jammu and Kashmir when Article 370 was withdrawn and the state was divided into two Union Territories. Malik, thus, became the last Governor of the erstwhile Jammu and Kashmir state.
Malik had said he would not fight elections but will continue to support the farmers’ interest.
UP-born Malik had hit the media headlines on several occasions with his remarks against the Narendra Modi-led government on farmers’ agitation.
He had also claimed that during his tenure as Jammu and Kashmir Governor, he was offered Rs 300 crore bribe for clearing two files, one belonging to Ambani and another to an RSS-affiliated man who was a minister in the previous Mehbooba Mufti-led PDP-BJP coalition government and claimed to be very close to the prime minister.
