SHILLONG, Oct 6: First Lady of Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh Neelam Mishra has called upon the people to preserve and promote the traditional loin loom weaving of the Northeastern region.
Addressing a gathering at a programme in Assam Rifles Headquarters, Laikor, on Thursday, she said that the rich tradition of loin loom weaving is now prevalent only in the North East.
“We must put in concerted effort in its preservation and encourage local weavers to carry it forward,” she said, expressing hope that the loin loom weaving tradition will contribute to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat.
Stressing that the traditional products of North East-based weavers must go from ‘Local to Global’ and must be the fashion statement of the region, she said that as most of the weavers of the region are women, loin loom weaving facilitates women empowerment and guarantees socio-economic development of the people.
The programme was also attended by a group of women led by president of Assam Rifles Wives’ Welfare Association Pushpa Nair.
