SHILLONG, Oct 7: In a bid to discourage mobile phone theft, the Department of Telecom (DoT) has expanded the implementation of Central Equipment Identity Registry (CEIR), which connects to the International Mobile Equipment Number (IMEI) database of all the mobile operators, in Meghalaya and other northeastern states.
According to a DoT official here, the CEIR acts as a central system for all network operators to share blacklisted mobile devices so that they are rendered non-functional on other networks even if the Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) card in the device is changed.
Now, with the extension of CEIR in the states of Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland, and Tripura, aggrieved consumers from Northeastern region can act against cases of mobile theft.
The consumers have been asked to file mobile handset theft information on www.ceir.gov.in by uploading police station complaint of lost mobile and ID proof to block the lost device in all Indian mobile networks.
“Substantial checks and balances have been incorporated in the system so that only the authorised user of the lost mobile can register the information and no one else,” the DoT official informed.
Informing that police can track the use of the blocked handset along with the location details if any one tries to use it, the official informed that the mechanism will help in not only retrieving the lost handset but also discouraging its theft.
“With this, Northeastern states have become the first few states which are able to use such facility, besides Maharashtra, Goa, Delhi and Karnataka. The facility is slated to be extended all Licensed Service Area of Country progressively,” it was informed.
