SHILLONG, Oct 9: Nongkrem legislator Lambor Malngiang urged the state government to discuss the matter pertaining to the interstate border dispute between Meghalaya and Assam with stakeholders before proceeding with the second round of official talks with the neighbouring state.
Speaking to media persons here on Sunday, Malngiang said each and every stakeholder should come together and discuss the plan of action on the matter.
He admitted that there will be some who will oppose while others will support any decision taken since it is impossible to satisfy each and everyone, and added that the government has to do its best as far to come up with the best possible solution to permanently resolve the dispute.
It may be mentioned that the state government, last month, constituted three regional committees to examine the status of the interstate border dispute in the six ‘remaining’ areas of differences between the two states.
The CEM of the Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council has been co-opted as member in the West Jaintia Hills committee. Members of the district councils have been co-opted in all the three committees.
The three regional committees will examine the present status of the six remaining areas of differences in Langpih (West Khasi Hills); Borduar, Nongwah-Mawtamur, Desh Doomreah and Block-II (Ri-Bhoi) and Block-I and Psiar-Khanduli (West Jaintia Hills).
Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong is the Chairman of the Ri-Bhoi committee, Cabinet Minister Renikton Lyngdoh Tongkhar is heading the West Khasi Hills committee while Cabinet Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar is leading the West Jaintia Hills panel.
The regional committees will coordinate with the relevant regional panels set up by the Assam government.
The Committees will submit their report to the Government of Meghalaya within a period of 45 days from the date of this notification based on the inspection of the villages and based on the agreed yardsticks of historical perspective, ethnicity of the local population, administrative convenience of local people, contiguity with the boundary and the perception of the people living in the area.
