MAWKYRWAT, Oct 10: Two Khelo India centres have been designated in South West Khasi Hills district with an aim to strengthen the eco-system of sports at the grassroots level, District Sports Officer (DSO) of South West Khasi Hills, Damang Syngkon, said.
The Khelo India centre at Nativity Higher Secondary School, Mawkyrwat, was inaugurated on Monday by the Additional Deputy Commissioner of the district, L Tariang.
“Maharam Higher Secondary School, Mawkyrwat, was selected for the discipline of Archery, while Nativity Higher Secondary School, Mawkyrwat was selected for the discipline of Athletics,” the DSO said.
Speaking on the occasion as the chief guest, Additional DC Tariang said, “If you want to go forward in life, you should have a very strong foundation”.
Stating that South West Khasi Hills district is a well-known place for producing champions and athletes, Tariang expressed hope that the Khelo India centres, which will train students of the district for the next four years, will help them rise to the ranks of athletes at the national and international level.
Speaking on the occasion, the DSO said two certified past champion athletes, who represented the state in different levels, have been selected as coaches to train the students. They are Jomsing Ramsiej and Bandasharai Marwein.
“I am confident that through this centre, we will be able to produce many champions and athletes who will bring laurels not only to the district but the state and country as a whole,” Syngkon said.
Principal of Nativity Higher Secondary School Fr. Venkey Friding Kharsyiemiong among others also spoke on the occasion.
