SHILLONG, Oct 12: Rajya Sabha member Rakesh Sinha has asked Chief Minister Conrad Sangma to expedite the construction of road from Kongthong village to Sder village.
In a letter to the chief minister, Sinha said that better road connectivity between the two villages will be a relief for thousands of suffering tribals.
Informing that “no substantive progress” has been made on the road project, Sinha also reminded Conrad that during a recent meeting at the national capital, the former was assured by the latter that the work on the Kongthong-Sder road would start soon.
Referring to Mawmang, Sder and Mawsohmad villages in East Khasi, which have been adopted by the MP, he said that they are not connected by roads or any other means of transportation.
“I visited Mawmang by foot which took me almost two hours to and fro,” Sinha said in the letter.
Meanwhile, speaking to The Shillong Times, the MP said he is concerned that the villages with potential for earning revenue through tourism in the Khat-ar Shnong area are poorly connected.
“I have walked to these villages and also found them denuded of all trees. The forests are all bald. We need to have a massive tree plantation programme also to combat climate change,” Sinha said.
