SHILLONG, Oct 13: Former Meghalaya Speaker AT Mondal is yet to choose a political party to represent and contest from in the assembly elections next year. He has, however, not ruled out entering the fray as an Independent.
Speaking to The Shillong Times, Mondal, who is still an active Congress member, said he is yet to take a final decision on the matter. “By November, and after consultations with the supporters, I will take a decision,” Mondal said, while adding that contesting as an independent candidate is also an option.
Notably, different political parties have approached the former Speaker seeking to rope him in. Mondal, who is working harder than ever to regain the seat, is confident that the mandate of the people of Phulbari constituency is with him this time.
Phulbari constituency is currently represented by NPP legislator SG Esmatur Mominin, who was lately seen with TMC leader Mukul Sangma in Garo Hills, which led to speculations doing rounds about whether he could jump ship to TMC.
