SHILLONG, Oct 16: Around 1500 youths from different parishes of Shillong attended the Annual Youth Fest at Sacred Heart Theological College (SHTC), Mawlai, on Sunday.
The theme of the programme was ‘Don Bosco for Youth and Youth for Christ: A 100 Years Journey’.
Chief guest of the programme, Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, in his speech, heaped praise on youths calling them a powerful group in the society.
Stating that youths are considered a priority during the policymaking process, the CM said the government is interested in nurturing young minds which is the reason behind sanction of schemes pertaining to sports and music.
The morning session ended with Holy Mass.
A cultural programme was one of the highlights of the programme wherein different communities such as Mizos, Nagas, Adivasis, Santhalis, and Garos besides students of NEHU presented their cultural show.
Ranikor MLA Pius Marwein, and Vice Provincial of Salesian Province of Shillong Fr John Zosiama were also present during the programme.
Speaking on the occasion, Marwein said there is potential in the youths to better the society.
Fr Zosiama, on the other hand, said it is an apt day to celebrate the Youth Fest as a remembrance of the 100 years of the arrival of the Salesians of Don Bosco to the Northeast.
The fest concluded with a jam session led by the Catholic youth of Tynring village.
