Driving, phones make a bad mix
“The roads are not safe anymore”, said a motorist as a speeding vehicle overtook him at Civil Hospital junction. Taken aback by the absurd speed with which the car passed him, he slowed his two-wheeler to eventually stop and analyse the incident.
He was overheard telling his pillion, “Thank God! Now we would’ve been dead without even being at fault.”
Road accidents continue to be reported from different parts of the city, with commuters’ carelessness being involved most of the times. Rash driving, recklessly overtaking, and over speeding — they have all been spoken of. But it is time we address the use of mobile phones or calling/texting while driving too — which is another harbinger of peril on the roads.
Commuters can be seen brazenly talking over the phone as they drive, and some even with phones stuck in their helmets while they ride their two-wheeler as well.
Recently, a scooter almost collided with a car at Malki point. The driver was apparently trying to make a phone call and the scooterist took a right at the Malki intersection to head towards Upper Lachumiere.
An argument then ensued.
The first question that the scooterist hurled at the driver was, “Why are you on the phone?”
“My wish,” yelled the driver as he made for his exit.
The scooterist is appalled at what he hears, but refuses to retaliate with words, and leaves too.
As their altercation affected the flow of traffic briefly, the cops had to intervene, and onlookers couldn’t help but pay attention to their noisy conversation while using their mobile phone.
