SHILLONG, Oct 19: Meghalaya Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader and Rangsakona MLA Zenith Sangma on Wednesday cast aspersions on the state government over lack of “proper” sports policy, while asserting that if given a chance, his party can bring the “best” sports policy for the youths of state.
“Given a mandate, we will do our best to create opportunities for our sports-loving people by bringing in the best sports policy for our youths, which appears to be lacking these days,” said Zenith, while addressing a gathering at the MLA Cup Grand Finale, 2022, at Nokatgre, Rangsakona, West Garo Hills.
Asserting that during his tenure as Sports Minister, he had introduced policies like District Sports Promotion Society with a yearly budget allocation of Rs 5 crore, Zenith said, “It was allocated to build sporting facilities like district sports clubs, instructors’ clubs and many others. However, the scheme was unfortunately discontinued post 2018.”
The TMC leader’s remarks come in the wake of Meghalaya’s dismal performance at the 36th National Games that concluded recently in Gujarat.
Meanwhile, Garobadha Polling Station won the MLA Cup 2022 after defeating Freedom FC.
