SHILLONG, Oct 20: Local students of the North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU) took out a rally on Thursday demanding that the university should continue to reserve 10% of the seats for students of Meghalaya. The rally was organised by the KSU NEHU Unit and the North-Eastern Hill University Students’ Union (NEHUSU).
The rally was held ahead of the Academic Council meeting convened by NEHU Vice Chancellor Prof Prabha Shankar Shukla.
NEHUSU finance secretary Wailad Siangshai said they received information that the NEHU authorities were planning to do away with the 10% reservation policy for local students belonging to the Khasi, Jaintia and Garo communities and is planning to implement the policy of awarding 10 additional points or marks to local students seeking admission into the university.
He pointed out that local students would face problems in getting admission in NEHU in future since they would have to compete with students from other states after the introduction of CUET.
He also stated that local students were facing a lot of confusion due to the introduction of CUET.
