SHILLONG, Oct 31: State National People’s Party (NPP) president WR Kharlukhi on Monday announced that former journalist and state tourism promoter Allan West Kharkongor will contest the 2023 Assembly elections from Sohra on an NPP ticket.
It may be mentioned that Kharkongor on Monday joined the NPP in the presence of Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong, among others, during a programme at the party office in Lower Lachumiere.
Speaking on the occasion, Kharkongor exhorted the chief minister and deputy chief minister to fulfil the long-cherished demand of the people to upgrade Sohra Civil Subdivision into a district.
“I do not see that there should be a problem for the MDA Government to create Sohra district. The people of Sohra are expecting a Christmas gift with the announcement of the creation of the new district,” Kharkongor said.
He also mentioned that the Sohra District Demand Forum (SDDF) had recently reminded Conrad of October 2018 meeting regarding the demand for upgrade of Sohra Civil Subdivision.
Meanwhile, the chief minister, speaking on the occasion, assured that the issue relating to the MCCL and the overall eco-restoration in Sohra will be addressed.
Informing that around Rs 1,200 crore has been earmark for the eco-restoration project for Sohra, Conrad said, “We need the involvement of various stakeholders, including the traditional heads and social organisations, to implement this massive project.”
