SHILLONG, Nov 2: Advocating better women participation in state politics, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Mahila Morcha has called for more allotment of party tickets to women for the upcoming 2023 Assembly polls.
Addressing media persons after a meeting of state BJP Mahila Morcha in the city on Wednesday, BJP Mahila Morcha national president Vanathi Srinivasan maintained that no government could be formed without the BJP in it.
Suggesting the state BJP to identify and field women candidates wherever feasible for the upcoming elections, Srinivasan said, “In the upcoming elections, we request the state unit to allot more seats to women candidates. However, the party’s focus should be on developing skilled and efficient candidates, for which aspiring women should identify themselves as performers.”
Srinivasan highlighted the fact that there are many aspiring women candidates in Meghalaya and the saffron party is doing its best to groom them.
“I would like to see more women candidates in the upcoming assembly elections here. Candidates should not seek party tickets just because they are women but rather they should come up with desirable qualities and develop careers as persons with winning potential in the respective constituencies.”
“For this, interested candidates will have to work hard and the saffron party is taking efforts in guiding them,” the BJP Mahila Morcha national president said.
“The state (BJP) president supports the fact that anyone who is doing good work will be given an opportunity to contest in the elections…as such, I hope the state Mahila Morcha will recommend good women candidates,” she added.
Shedding light on the BJP’s upcoming tasks, she said, “We also have a plan of organising a women’s conference in the state in view of the elections”.
With regard to crime against women, she said, “Wherever an abuse or criminal act is committed against women, BJP is the party that always comes out in support of the victims.
“”I am sure everyone is aware of the new acts introduced by Government of India for the protection of the rights of women as well as children”.
She further informed that the plight of single mothers in Meghalaya will be highlighted in the state BJP manifesto along with various ways and means to address it.
Talking about the prospects of BJP in the upcoming elections, she said, “All over the country, BJP continues to show good prospects; in the upcoming elections in Meghalaya, too, formation of a government without the support of BJP seems impossible.”
Stating that the BJP is working hard under the leadership of the state party president Ernest Mawrie, Srinivasan said the Mahila Morcha possesses effective strategies to reach out to women voters in Meghalaya.
Meanwhile, Mawrie has revealed that the BJP is the only party that provides 33 per cent reservation for women.
