SHILLONG, Nov 5: A unique project, going by the name ‘Kitchen Garden’, has been initiated by West Shillong MLA Mohendro Rapsang in his constituency to provide access to fresh and locally grown vegetables.
As part of the Kitchen Garden project, Rapsang on Saturday distributed equipment to several women beneficiaries in the constituency.
In his address, Rapsang said he came up with the idea of promoting Kitchen Garden for womenfolk in the constituency during COVID-19, and since then, he had worked upon the same.
He said the Kitchen Garden aims at providing access to fresh, healthy and locally grown food, and connects people with nature and raises community awareness on adopting healthy eating habits.
“This system also involves the process of recycling of kitchen waste. But the most important factor is that it creates a feeling of satisfaction and enjoyment in harvesting fruits of one’s own hard work and labour,” Rapsang said
According to him, the initiative would help in educating the children about food production and farming.
Meanwhile, Rapsang distributed packages among the beneficiaries, each comprising compost bins, grow beds, vegetable seeds, et al.
A five-day training was also imparted to about 240 participants by Bethany Society on setting up of a Kitchen Garden.
