SHILLONG, Nov 6: The Chief Executive Member (CEM) of Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) and MDC of Sohra, Titosstarwell Chyne has strongly criticised the attempt of his political rival to use money power in the run-up to the 2023 elections, even as he alleged that the same was done in 2018’s Assembly polls.
Speaking at the general meeting of UDP Sohra Circle, Chyne said there is a sense of insecurity among many after seeing the wave in favour of the UDP.
The KHADC CEM will contest polls on UDP ticket from Sohra.
UDP general secretary Jemino Mawthoh in the presence of party’s working president Allantry F Dkhar announced the candidature of Chyne during the meeting at Mawkdok.
“There is also an attempt to create confusion among the people by speaking all kinds of negative stories about the UDP. I am also concerned that the people of the constituency were misled by the money power by agreeing to be part of a meeting of one of the political parties recently,” Chyne, who is also the MDC from Sohra, said.
In the past five years, he said, Sohra has gone down in terms of growth and development.
He lamented that the constituency is yet to get a community health centre while there is no sign of a plan to upgrade any of the PHCs in the constituency.
The KHADC CEM said the livelihoods of the people of Sohra have been badly affected after the COVID-19 pandemic.
He claimed the state government is not helping the people as it has put a ban on the sand and boulders mining.
It may be noted that People’s Democratic Front (PDF) MLA Gavin M Mylliem currently holds the Sohra seat. Chyne had suffered defeat in the hands of Mylliem in 2018 polls.
