SHILLONG, Nov 8: The United Democratic Party (UDP) on Tuesday dismissed reports that party president Metbah Lyngdoh was planning to contest the upcoming Assembly polls from both Mairang and Mawphlang constituencies.
“The report is not factual. It looks like an attempt by the political opponents to create confusion in the minds of the people,” party sources said, while making it clear that Lyngdoh would contest from Mairang while a candidate has been finalised for the Mawphlang seat.
While the name of the candidate was not revealed, the sources said the party will award the Mawphlang ticket to a former bureaucrat.
It may be mentioned that the UDP was in a dilemma after sitting MLA Eugeneson Lyngdoh announced that he would not contest the elections in 2023 due to personal reasons.
After Eugeneson’s announcement, the party approached PDF general secretary Auspicious L Mawphlang who turned down the offer.
Earlier, NPP state president WR Kharlukhi had said that the party will not contest from the Mairang seat out of respect for the sitting MLA who is also the Assembly Speaker.
