Guwahati, Nov 10: The ruling alliance of BJP and Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) came out triumphant in the Deori Autonomous Council (DAC) elections, bagging 12 of the 22 seats in the council.

The saffron party had contested in 18 council constituencies while AGP fielded its candidates in four.

Opposition Congress, which contested in 14 council constituencies, could secure only two seats in the polls.

The elections were held across 93 polling stations across six districts and four sub-divisions in Upper Assam last Tuesday, recording a voter turnout of around 80 percent with 43,595 electors exercising their franchise.

The council has 26 members, of which 22 members are elected and the remaining four are nominated.

“The resounding victory of BJP and its allies in the Deori Autonomous Council election revalidates popular trust in our government guided by the vision of adarniya Prime Minister Narendra Modi ji. My deep gratitude to the voters of the council area for giving us this huge mandate. I thank each party worker,” Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma reacted to the triumph on Twitter.

Sarma had, while releasing the party manifesto (sankalpa patra) ahead of the council elections recently, had made a slew of promises for the all-around development of the Deori community in the state.
