TURA/SHILLONG, Nov 9: Ahead of the Assembly elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Garo Hills received a shot in the arm on Wednesday after around 700 people from various parties, including various sitting MDCs, joined the party.
According to a statement, the leaders joined the party during a programme which was attended by national BJP vice president M Chuba Ao, State BJP president Ernest Mawrie, national BJP secretary Rituraj Sinha, among others.
Some of the new faces in the state BJP now include sitting NPP MDC from Naguapara Dhormonath Sangma, NPP C&RD Block chairman from Ampati Drozil Sangma, block secretary of INC Dular Sarkar, NPP leader from Mendipathar Pulin Hato, and their hundreds of supporters.
Addressing the gathering, Mawrie exuded confidence that the BJP will form the government next year in Meghalaya due to the increasing support of people from all quarters while Ao touched upon the ideology of the party.
Meanwhile, the new members of the state BJP, while acknowledging the commitment of the Narendra Modi-led central government, have maintained that it is only the BJP that works for the uplift of the people.
Stating that the “pro-people attitude” of the BJP is what drew them to the party, the new BJP members argued that it is the BJP that can pull the plug on the corrupt practices in the state.
