SHILLONG, Nov 9: The High Court of Meghalaya has asked the Jowai Municipality to file an affidavit, detailing the steps to be taken for garbage disposal in Jowai until a waste disposal plant is constructed at Khliehriat.
It may be mentioned that the state government had submitted before the High Court that the tender process has been initiated for the construction of a solid waste processing and disposal plant at Khliehriat at an estimated cost in excess of Rs. 13 crore.
While the Municipality submitted that arrangements have been in place for the past few months to deal with the daily removal of garbage both from residential and commercial complexes, the petitioner, however, complained that the woes of the Jowai residents continue.
“Apparently, the arrangements made by the Municipality may not be adequate. The Municipality should ensure that steps are taken to remove and dispose of the garbage on a daily basis without piling up the same anywhere within the town limits or within any close distance from residential areas,” the HC said.
“Since the State seeks leave to file documents pertaining to the tender process of waste disposal plant, let such documents be filed by way of an affidavit before the matter is taken up next,” it said, adding that an affidavit should be filed by the Municipality, detailing the steps to be taken till the waste disposal plant is constructed.
The matter will be heard by the High Court again on December 14.
